Other Spanish Refuges
SOS Galgos
- an adoption group formed in 2000 in Barcelona, Spain by Anna Clements and Albert Sordé.
Their efforts extend both to the greyhounds at the remaining greyhound race
track in Barcelona as well as to the native Spanish Galgo. They are
unique in that they focus on the adoption of galgos as pets WITHIN Spain. They are
very active in the educational and legislative arena also, addressing the
root of the galgo problem - overbreeding, lack of enforcement of existing
laws, and lack of homes.
Defensa dels
animals d'Osona - A refuge in
Vic for 10 years and staffed by 20 volunteers. Made a major contribution by
saving the 239 greyhounds at the Plaza España race track in Barcelon when it
closed a few years ago.
Galgos Sin Fronteras
(Madrid) - works exclusively for galgos. Managed by Cristina
Garcia Moreno. They are able to keep
galgos both at a kennel in Las Rozas and in homes until they can be
relocated for adoption. Has rescued more than 200 galgos.
Protectora de Segovia (Segovia)
Caceres (Sociedad Protectora de Animales)
Recal (Almendralejo) - a refuge specializing in
galgos and unique in that they have developed a reasonable working
relationship with the hunter's association.
Las Nieves (Madrid) -
of its 300 dogs, about 100 are galgos. They work closely with GIN to
find permanent homes for the galgos.
Amigos de los Galgos
