The Scooby Staff

Fermín Pèrez

Fermín is the heart and soul of Scooby.  He became involved with galgos in 1995 and has since become a major spokesman for galgos both within Spain and internationally.  Through his work, Scooby evolved from a small municipal "dog pound" into the largest galgo refuge in Spain.

Despite working full time as a high school teacher, Fermín manages the daily activities of Scooby, talks to legislative bodies, goes on galgo rescue and retrieval missions, schedules volunteer visits, and puts in time working at the shelter.  It would be hard to find anyone more dedicated than he is to galgos.

A Few Scooby Facts

Scooby is Spain's largest galgo refuge and also acts as the municipal pound for Medina del Campo.

The current refuge covers a little over 7 acres, and sits on a lot 3 times that size.

The number of galgos brought to Scooby has grown from 3 in 1997, to over 200 in 1998, to 583 in 2002.  In 2004 a total of 827 dogs (90% galgos), 35 cats and 1 raccoon were taken in and saved.

At this time (Fall 2005), there are about 500 dogs at Scooby, with the number fluctuating as adoptions occurred and new galgos entered the refuge.

Approximately 350 galgos were adopted through Scooby in 2002.

The Work of Scooby

The story of Scooby begins when Fermín became its president in 1996.  For 5 years, he and his volunteers struggled to save a growing number of galgos in an old warehouse with no heat or running water.  The present shelter opened in 2001.

Although its ideal capacity is 250 to 300 dogs, during the peak months of February and March, it may be home to well over 500 dogs.  Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed, and any wounds and illnesses are treated.

Construction at Scooby continues.  The next project is to build more isolation kennels to accommodate more new arrivals.

A Salute to Groups Taking Scooby Galgos

Without your willingness to take Scooby galgos after they've been made ready for adoption,

these beautiful deserving hounds would sit forever waiting for their passage to a permanent home.

We, at Operation Scooby, want to thank each group for every galgo they take.  After all, it's their life...
