Spanish Galgo vs Greyhound
To many, the physical appearance of the
two breeds is very similar. Here are a few of the differences:
Coat - the galgo comes in two
varieties, smooth and a longer wiry coat. The wiry hair can be as long
as 10 cm. The greyhound is always a smooth coated dog.
Size - the galgo measures 23 to 27
inches. The greyhound measures up to 30 inches.
Weight - The galgo weighs between
44 and 66 lbs. The greyhound weighs between 55 to 80 lbs (NGA).
Endurance - the greyhound is a
sprinter, very fast over short distances. The galgo is bred and built for
sustained galloping.
Chest - the galgo chest is less
deep than the greyhound and should not extend down to the level of the
elbows.
Dorsal-lumbar line - the galgo has a slight concavity of the
back and a convexity of the loin. Greyhounds have a flatter back.
Feet - both breeds are described
as "hare-footed" but the galgo foot is longer.
Ears - both have "rose ears", but
the galgo ear is longer, extending to the back of the lips
Personality - Galgos are
active and energetic hunters, and need more exercise than the more mellow
greyhound. Most live happily with cats. Galgos are never crated
in Spain and are totally unaccustomed to this type of confinement.
